A joint security deployment conducted by federal and state institutions resulted in the arrest of 21 individuals in the municipality of Suchiapa, Chiapas, as part of Operation Enjambre. Among those taken into custody during the early hours of Saturday in the San Esteban neighborhood are the current municipal president, Jorge Lorenzo Lara Cordero, and former mayor Alexis Nucamendi Gómez.
The Gabinete de Seguridad detailed that the operation involved elements from the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA), the Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana, the Fiscalía General de la República, and the Guardia Nacional, working in coordination with the Secretaría de Seguridad del Pueblo and the Fiscalía General del Estado de Chiapas. Local police commanders and municipal officers were also detained under allegations of abuse of authority, corruption, and criminal association.
The legal proceedings stem from an incident recorded on September 25, when an anti-narcotics operation in Suchiapa led to the arrest of four individuals and the seizure of illegal substances. The suspects were remanded to the municipal jail; however, one of the detainees was subsequently released without legal justification. This situation triggered an internal investigation by the Fiscalía General del Estado de Chiapas that led to the arrest of municipal police director Jesús Antonio “N” on September 29.
The prosecutor's office confirmed that investigations aimed to clarify the participation of public servants in the escape, emphasizing that there will be no impunity or collusion between authorities and organized crime.
The detention of the political figures highlights an ongoing investigation into municipal governance in Suchiapa. Alexis Nucamendi Gómez previously served as municipal president for the 2018–2021 and 2021–2024 terms, while Jorge Lorenzo Lara Cordero assumed office for the 2024–2027 period after heading the local Public Works division during Nucamendi's administration. Both individuals have been placed at the disposal of judicial authorities to determine their legal status as investigations remain active.
